1:00 AM – Mrs. Cardinal on the mealworm feeder. At the very end of the clip she’s joined by Mr. Cardinal.
Acrobatic White Breasted Nuthatch on the cylinder feeder.

1:00 AM – More battling Finches, until a Cardinal comes along and disperses them. After a few minutes, they come back, meek and mild, no squabbling.
Busy White Breasted Nuthatch gives the compressed seed a good gouging.
A couple of Blue Jays:
1:00 AM – More action from the platform feeder. A White Breasted Nuthatch and a Blue Jay:
Since we’re not able to access current videos due to some kind of problem with Arlo, here’s an archive video from November, 2016. This is one of the many we posted via the WordPress media system that disappeared from the website. Now, we’re reposting it.
1:00 AM – One of my favorites, the White Breasted Nuthatch. This one is really going after the new compressed seed cylinder. Right side up, and upside down.
Here’s a few short videos. In the first, look for the cat sitting on the path grooming itself. Very nonchalant. Nothing to see here, birds, nothing to see. When the birds in the platform fly off, he strolls across the deck.
Since Robins are ground feeders, we don’t usually see them in the feeders. Here’s a very brief video of one sitting on the deck railing.
1:00 AM – We put out a new cylinder of compressed seeds, replacing the old one, which had been well pecked and chewed. Here are three birds, trying it out. The White Breasted Nuthatch, eating upside down, a Downy Woodpecker, and a Finch.
We put the remains of the old compressed seed cylinder in the platform feeder, where it was a very popular item. Here’s a Dark-eyed Junco picking through the pieces:
And here are some Finches, including one that flings the bigger pieces around. I admire that kind of spirit in a Finch.
1:00 AM – Several Blue Jays have been around lately, mostly on the platform feeder. They particularly like peanuts, of course.
Other platform activity. A Finch of some kind – It’s hard for me to tell the difference between a House Finch and a Purple Finch. Then a White Breasted Nuthatch arrives, selects a seed to take with him, and departs. The Finch doesn’t mind.
Finches feeding and squabbling while a squirrel calmly eats peanuts in the background. Squirrels around here have it good.
1:00 AM – Mourning Dove gradually ruffles his feathers out until he’s a big fluffy ball. The whole process took about a minute and a half. He stayed puffed up for several minutes, every now and then contracting a little, then expanding again. It looked like he might be bathing, but he didn’t get in the water. Presumably he was just airing himself out.
Here’s an irritable Cardinal running off a Nuthatch and Sparrow. In slow motion.
1:00 AM – Part two of the ‘Flock of Sparrows’ video. In this one the Sparrows share with a White Breasted Nuthatch and Purple Finch.
Red-bellied Woodpecker on the platform feeder. There’s a special appearance by a Brown Headed Nuthatch at the end of the clip.
3:51 AM – A flock of Sparrows have been around for a few days. Here’s a video of them sharing the platform feeder with a Cardinal and Dove. They aren’t spooked by the bigger birds, and keep right on eating.
Another birdbath video, this one with a Robin, Purple Finch and Bluebird. They’re probably very happy the ice is gone. For now, anyway.
4:41 AM – Red-bellied Woodpecker in the platform feeder. He leaves, and a tiny Chickadee comes in after him.
White Breasted Nuthatch is completely comfortable eating upside down.
