Doves, along with Squirrels, are our most frequent platform feeders.

1:00 AM – Life as a Blue Jay:
Doves, along with Squirrels, are our most frequent platform feeders.
More Squirrel antics:
1:00 AM – Something took a run at this Blue Jay. The video is in slow motion but whatever it was is not identifiable. Making it a UFO (Unidentified Flying Object)
Either something was threatening this Dove, or he was just airing himself out.
Just a video of the Eastern Towhee (now a regular visitor) having a snack.
1:00 AM – Don’t usually see more than one Carolina Wren at a time, but here we have two having lunch together:
More harmony among birds, a Cardinal and Dove sharing the feeder without pecking or flying at one another.
This Eastern Towhee has disturbing dull red eyes:
1:00 AM – Carolina Wren and Mr. Cardinal at the platform feeder:
The birds are getting along better, probably because they know each other – like patrons at a local diner – and know there’s plenty of food to go around.
More of one of the Blue Jays eating. We’re sure seeing a lot of these birds, after a long absence.
1:00 AM – I counted eight peanuts this greedy Blue Jay stuffed in it’s gullet, but I could have under counted.
Another video of two birds of different species getting along in the feeder. Evidently they’ve all finally realized there’s plenty to go around.
More of the Eastern Towhee:
1:00 AM – Brief video of a Downy Woodpecker getting peanuts from the rail. They only stay for a few seconds before flapping back into the trees.
Outraged Blue Jay looking around for peanuts.
Eastern Towhee and Mourning Dove face off in the platform feeder:
1:00 AM – These backyard birds have been hanging around the same feeders for so long the different species don’t mind eating right next to each other.
The Brown Thrasher, one of our favorites.
Squirrel rooting among the seeds. There are more (and bolder) squirrels these days. They barely scamper away when we come out on the porch.
1:00 AM – We had some unusual Dove action this morning. First, here’s one ‘displaying’. Perhaps it’s mating season.
Then we have that same Dove discouraging a Squirrel from joining him in the feeding trough.
Finally, we have a brief Dove fight:
1:00 AM — Lots of Red-winged Blackbird activity the last few days. We’re seeing small flocks instead of individuals. Here’s a big male checking out the surroundings:
Here’s that flock of Red-wings. They’re dominating the feeder.
Here’s a Blue Jay and a Red-wing:
1:00 AM – We’ve been seeing a lot of the female Red-winged Blackbirds, but not many of the ‘breeding’ males. Here’s one we caught on camera. Notice how he runs off the male ‘non-breeding’ birds:
Here’s a few of the less colorful Red-wings, and a drab Dove:
And just to remind us that the world is a dangerous place for birds and other small creatures, here’s a prowling cat:
