1:00 AM – Everything is normal at the green platform feeder – all the regulars are there:
Your have to look carefully, but here are two instances of one Carolina Wren attacking another. First time we’ve seen that.

1:00 AM – This is no secret, but Cardinals, like most other birds, like mealworms:
And Blue Jays like seeds. Also Peanuts.
And squirrels REALLY like peanuts:
1:00 AM – We don’t get many visits from Ground Squirrels up on the rail feeders. This one is very wary. When he hear/sees/senses some threat he freezes, and stays that way:
It’s true that the early bird gets the worm, in this case, a Cardinal at 4:00AM and some mealworms:

1:00 AM – We still have a Purple Finch couple living in the yard. We thought they’d all departed for somewhere else, but no, here they are:
The Eastern Towhee can be entertaining to watch:
Sometimes the sun hits the male Cardinal just right, and we can see how really red he is:
1:00 AM – A Carolina Wren making strange metallic sounds.

1:00 AM – Although we can’t see the cat, it looks like a cat attack to me. This time he/she came from the ground side of the rail, instead of the deck, and almost got that Towhee:

1:00 AM – Here’s an unfortunate Squirrel with only half a tail. We speculate that a cat got hold of him, but he managed to get away.

1:00 AM – Don’t usually see more than one Carolina Wren at a time, but here we have two having lunch together:
More harmony among birds, a Cardinal and Dove sharing the feeder without pecking or flying at one another.

The birds are getting along better, probably because they know each other – like patrons at a local diner – and know there’s plenty of food to go around.
More of one of the Blue Jays eating. We’re sure seeing a lot of these birds, after a long absence.
