1:00 AM – Here’s a Goldfinch, a non-breeding male, I think. That accounts for the rather dull color and lack of markings on the head. We haven’t seen many Goldfinches this year.
This Cardinal, shown here bathing, seems to have started molting.
Finally, a Carolina Chickadee pecking on the compressed seed cylinder.
12:34 AM – We don’t see that many Robins at the feeders. More often, they’re feeding on the lawn. This one is getting a drink of water. He stares down a couple of Mourning Doves.
___
Male Northern Cardinal having lunch, and looking around for someone. This looks like more than the normal alertness-for-cats-and-hawks, so I suppose he’s looking for Mrs. Cardinal, or possibly other males.

This is a good video of a Yellow-rumped Warbler on the mealworm feeder. He moves to the other side of the feeder, out of our sight, then a bluebird flies right at him, and he disappears somewhere. I can’t actually see him flying away from the feeder, but in an instant the bluebird is sitting where there once was a warbler.
1:00 AM – Carolina Wren bathing. He’s interesting to watch, a kind of hit and run bather.
From the mealworm feeder we see a male Cardinal, then in the middle of the clip, a female and male sharing mealworms. It happens quick, so look for it after the male flies off.
1:00 AM – We moved the bird bath and cameras around, and got decent videos of various birds drinking. In this one, we see a Tufted Titmouse, a Dove, Squirrel and two Finches. Nobody bathing yet.
Typical patrons of the cylinder feeder.
Not so typical patron of the cylinder feeder. But he’s really liking it.
1:00 AM – This is a rather long video taken with the Nikon camera instead of the Arlo security cams. The quality is better, except for the shaky camera operator (me). We see Finches, Doves, Downy Woodpecker and Cardinals at various feeders around the yard, instead of the platform on the deck. We took that down to try to get rid of the squirrels. The video is over three minutes, so it’s the only one today.
1:00 AM – Another retro page, from a year ago. I’ve got to start keeping up with the new videos:
Tuesday – 4.11.2017
1:52 AM – The immature bluebirds were around again yesterday. We were reading about them. Evidently at this stage they’re out of the nest for good (of course), do they spend the next few weeks eating and hiding. Here’s one doing exactly that:
—
It’s still the season for Cardinal food sharing:
—
The spotlight has been on the immature bluebirds lately, and the ‘kissing’ cardinals, but the other birds are still there in the background. Here’s a Purple Finch, though not one of the realy dramatically raspberry colored ones.
1:00 AM – One year ago today, there was lots going on in the yard.
Saturday – 4.8.2017
12:05 AM – This is great. I had no idea these young bluebirds could be so aggressive.
—
One of the fledglings takes his first bath (probably). I guess he’s a little preoccupied when dad comes by with a snack. Which must have annoyed Mr. Bluebird, since he seems to spend every moment of the day ferrying mealworms from the feeder to a bird-mouth.
—
Here’s a break from the many home movies the bluebird parents now have of the kids growing up. We had a Ruby-throated Hummingbird have a nice long drink of nectar. We’re really looking forward to swarms of them this summer.
—
Finally, this Yellow-rumped Warbler has some markings we haven’t seen before. He’s a little small and rotund, and we’re wondering if he might be a fledgling, or maybe a little older.
1:00 AM – Brief video of Bruno the Dog, with a slow-motion replay. Not a great video, but this is his first visit in quite a while, so we thought we’d show it.
Another video of the Red-bellied Woodpecker, with it’s impressive beak.
Bluebird at home on the mealworm feeder. (Camera was tilted, not the feeder).
